Detroit City FC enter their ninth Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament with thundering 5-1 victory over Michigan Rangers FC of the NPSL.
With freezing temperatures, the match was moved from Keyworth Stadium to the Legacy Center in Brighton, MI. City brought the heat.
The Rangers took the early lead with a 6th minute free kick laser by Giuseppe Barone. The half ended level thanks to Preston Tabort Etaka scoring on a rebound in the 22nd minute.
The second half was all City, with Maxi Rodriguez, Callum Montgomery, and Haruki Yamazaki entering the match for the kickoff. After a strong showing against Brooklyn FC three days prior, Maxi scored his first goal since returning to the squad at the 55 minute mark. Alex Dalou earned the assist.
Nine minutes later, Maxi returned the favor, on a little give-and-go to Dalou who scored his first goal in rouge and gold. In the 80th minute, Dalou notched his second helper, sending Ates Diouf in to score on Rangers’ keeper, Sebastian Doppelhofer, giving City a 4-1 lead. The evening was capped when Tabort Etaka received a through ball from Abdoulaye Diop to score his second goal of the night in the 86th minute.
