History was made on September 28, 2019. During halftime of the Detroit City FC/Napa Valley 1839 FC match, Sean Mann announced Detroit City FC’s commitment to women’s soccer by establishing a team that would play in United Women’s Soccer in 2020.
On December 12, 2019, Detroit City FC named Salvatore Piraine as the women’s team’s head coach.
On January 4, 2020, sixty women registered to attend the inaugural tryouts for the women’s team. Friends, family, and the Northern Guard Supporters attended the two hours of scrimmaging on both fields at the Detroit City Fieldhouse, as Coach Piraine and his assistants took note of potential Detroit City FC players.
