In the 9th minute, Kenna White and a Lansing player stood at the center stripe as the ball was cleared over their heads from the City zone. White and the Lansing player chased it along the left sideline. The Lansing player lost the race and after poking it past an on-rushing defender, White broke in alone and slotted it past Lansing’s keeper Myia Danek to give City a 1-nil lead.
Three minutes later, Tatiana Mason dropped a corner kick into the crowded box, which bounced to Maddie Wolfbauer. She shot it toward goal, catching the goalpost and deflecting in to double City’s lead.
City dominated the half, and in the final minute, Tatiana Mason, toying with the Lansing defenders, sent the ball near the top of the box, behind Madison Duncan. Duncan tracked back to claim it. Noting that she did not have a clear shot at net, she passed it out of the box to Margaret Berry who launched a shot high above the reach of Danek, then dropped onto the goalpost and into the net. The half ended with City owning a 3-nil lead.
Of course, City wasn’t done. In the 51st minute, Danek attempted to clear the ball out of the Lansing end. It didn’t make it to the center stripe as Tatiana Mason knocked it down, then sent a ball through the stretched defense to Maddie Wolfbauer who placed a shot into the upper corner of the Lansing goal.
Four minutes later, a pretty three-touch pass play from Tatiana Mason (inside Detroit half) to Maddie Wolfbauer (center stripe) to Ashley Zugay (running down the left side) to a wide open Mami Yamaguchi who lobbed it beyond Danek for a five-goal lead.
In the 63rd minute, Lansing scored to cut the lead to four goals. But five minutes later, a corner kick by Ashley Zugay went low into the box. It bounced around until cleared back out to Zugay. She lofted the ball back into the mix. Elisa Baeron headed it down and two bounces later it was in the net.
Player of the Match: Maddie Wolfbauer.
The team would take their undefeated record to Corktown on Wednesday May 26th, then back home to Keyworth on Saturday the 29th against the Chicago Mustangs.
